Intro to Encaustic Painting

If you love layers and luminous rich texture, you will love working with wax. This hands-on studio course introduces participants of all levels to encaustic painting using a heated palette and encaustic wax medium. This course will provide demonstrations and opportunities to practice and apply 2D techniques, including application, fusing, etching, texturizing, graphite and Xerox transfers, collaging, mark making, and incorporating found objects. Option to work with a torch as well as a heat gun. Please bring an apron and wear closed-toed shoes.  See dates below.

Encaustic Painting - Level 2

This hands on studio workshop will offer participants a deeper understanding of encaustic painting through color mixing and layering, texturizing, paint application and mark-making techniques as well as encaustic monotype printing.  Students are encouraged develop and explore their personal ideas and visual vocabulary on multiple panels. It is a prerequisite that participants have completed an introductory level class prior to enrolling. Please bring an apron and wear closed-toed shoes.  See dates below.

Encaustic Open Studio

Encaustic Open Studio sessions offer an excellent opportunity for beginning to advanced encaustic artists to practice their skills in a supportive environment.  These workshops are open to anyone with prior training in encaustic painting. Instruction and critique are not included.

A hotplate and heat gun will be provided, and a covered table surface near ventilation will be prepared. You will be responsible for all materials that you would like to work with; panels, brushes, encaustic medium, encaustic paint and any other supplies that you would like to work with. Birch plywood panels, encaustic medium and encaustic paint will be available for purchase. 

Each Encaustic Open Studio session is $30. You may also purchase a punch card of 4 Encaustic Open Studio sessions for $100. You may pay by cash, check, or credit card.

To register, please fill out the form below and indicate the workshop/open studio that you will be attending. You must register and pay for the Intro to Encaustic Workshops at least a week in advance and Encaustic Open Studios at least 2 days in advance, but you may pay at the session.  Encaustic sessions will only run if there is a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 4 participants. If we don't reach the minimum number to run a session, those registered will be notified 24 hours in advance and issued a full refund if payment was completed.


Adults 18 or older with prior experience working with encaustics may register. Students under 18 require special permission. Amy Vander Els reserves the right to cancel courses, change course times, and limit enrollment. The student agrees to abide by any and all rules of the studio. Amy Vander Els will assume no responsibility for any loss, personal or physical.


Workshops are held at The Artists' Muse, 9 Water Street (second floor-no elevator - door on the far right side of the building), in Amesbury, MA. There is free on-street parking, or a free public parking lot directly across the street
